Conductor cross-section and NYM cable specification: What does the type abbreviation "NYM" in the context of cables and wires mean?
Cable specifications in the context of NYM cables are type abbreviations consisting of letters and numbers, which provide information on the design and intended use of NYM cables and wires. "N" indicates that it is a cable according to the German standard VDE 0250-204, "Y" indicates that PVC is the isolation material used for the cores and the sheath, and "M" stands for sheathed cable. If the specification NYM is followed by the abbreviation "J", this indicates that it is a multicore sheathed cable with a green-yellow protective conductor. On the other hand, "O" indicates that no protective conductor is present. Most NYM cables such as the NYM cable 3x1.5 have additional specifications. The first number, in this case number 3, represents the number of cores of the sheathed cable. The number following "x" indicates the cross-section of the NYM cable in square millimetres, in this case 1.5 mm².
Example for a specification: Sheathed cable NYM-J/-0 3x1.5
N: standard cable according to VDE standard 0250-204
Y: isolation made of PVC
M: sheathed cable
J: with green-yellow protective conductor
O: without protective conductor
3: number of cores
x: times
1.5: Conductor cross-section in square millimetres
Installation of NYM cables
UV-resistant and flame-retardant NYM cables with a PVC outer sheath are suitable for installation on, above, in and under render in dry, moist and wet rooms as well as in brickwork and concrete, however, they must not be embedded in vibrated and tamped concrete. Provided that they are protected from direct sunlight, NYM cables can also be used outdoors, however, not directly underground or in water.
Areas of application of NYM cables
NYM sheathed cables are versatile, but particularly suitable as installation cables for residential indoor electric installations. Cables with a cross-section of 1.5 square millimetres can be used to easily connect lighting and socket circuits. NYM cables with a cross-section of 2.5 square millimetres are suitable for high-consumption appliances such as dishwashers and fridges. The most common NYM cables include the NYM 3x1.5, NYM 3x2.5, NYM 5x1.5 and NYM 5x2.5 cables.
