Due to the increased test voltage and the special marking the cable is designed as bus cable in the EIB/KNX facility control system according to EN 50090. For the Instabus itself is used only the red/black pair (transmission of 24 V supply voltage plus data packages), the second pair (white/yellow) is redundant. The cable may be installed on or under plaster, in ducts and installation channels in dry or wet rooms.

EIB/KNX bus for building management systems

EIB and KNX are regarded as building management system basics. Through the increased test voltage and their marking, EIB/KNX cables have been specially designed for use as bus cables in EIB/KNX building management systems according to EN 50090.

How is the wiring structure of EIB/KNX cables?

EIB/KNX have linear structure, which means that they are divided into15 segments, each with 15 lines. Depending on the EIB/KNX power supply, it is possible to connect up to 64 bus devices on each line. A segment is composed of 15 lines connected to each other through a so-called main line, which usually serves for connecting devices with a central function in home automation. These devices include, for instance, sensors and actuators. With regard to the EIB/KNX structure it should also be noted that only one wire pair (rt/sw) is required for the installation bus, through which the 24 V bus voltage and the data telegrams are transmitted together. The second wire pair (ge/ws) serves as a back-up or for special purposes.

KNX or EIB? Is there a difference between EIB and KNX?

The abbreviation KNX stands for Konnex, i.e. connection. In building automation, the fieldbus KNX is the successor to the fieldbuses EIB, BatiBus and EHS. From a technical point of view, KNX is the improved standard of EIB (European Installation Bus), also known as Instabus. However, the EIB standard has not been withdrawn and continues to exist. This means that EIB can still be used for existing systems and devices. In order to keep pace with technical progress, the European Installation Bus has been continuously improved and is now known under the name KNX. Innovative EIB/KNX cables are therefore the right choice for future installations. KNX bus cables and EIB are fully compatible.

EIB/KNX operating principle

An EIB/KNX system functions via three components: the sensor, the actuator and the bus cable. For example, if a light sensor in a smart home environment detects that twilight is setting in outside, the sensor sends a command via the KNX bus cable to the luminaire connected to the system, which acts as an actuator to increase the brightness accordingly. Lighting control via these EIB/KNX components is just one example for intelligent control at home using bus technology. A weather station can also be set up as a sensor which, for instance, sends the signal to close the blinds via the EIB/KNX bus if there is too much sunlight entering the house.

Important information for the EIB/KNX installation

Flame retardant EIB/KNX cables designed for building management systems are suitable for installation above and under render, in pipes as well as in dry, damp and wet rooms. If the cables are protected from direct sunlight by means of PVC sheathing and PVC core isolation, they can also be installed outdoors. For underground installation, it is recommended to use the EIB/KNX PE bus cable. Since all switches and sensors are networked with each other via a bus cable, EIB/KNX wiring is relatively simple and can be carried out without much wiring effort.
