NSGAFOU meaning
When choosing the cable best suited to your needs, there is a range of designations telling you about the cables’ and lines’ essential characteristics and structure. This is also the case for the rubber single-core cable NSGAFOU. Below you will find the meaning for the NSGAFOU codes:
One of the main distinctive features is the first letter, “N”, specifying that the NSGAFOU cable is a standardised line. “SG” means special rubber single-core cable. “A” indicates “wire” and the additions of “O” and “U” represent the properties “oil-resistant” and “flame-retardant”. “U” used to abbreviate the word “inflammable”.
Examples of the type code NSGAFOU: NSGAFOU 1x240 – NSGAFOU 1 x 2.5 – NSGAFOU 3.6/6kV
Apart from the already mentioned NSGAFOU meaning, the codes with information about strand count, conductor cross-section and nominal voltage are added. They are provided as numbers, as you can see in the rubber single-core cable NSGAFOU 1x240 1.8/3.6kV:
N: standard line according to VDE 0250 T. 602
SG: special rubber single-core cable
A: core / wire
F: fine-stranded
O: oil-resistant
U: flame-retardant according to VDE 0482-332-1-2/IEC 60332-1-2
1: strand count
X: times
240: nominal conductor cross-section of 240mm2
1.8/3.6kV: nominal voltage conductor-earth = 1.8kV, conductor-conductor = 3.6kV
So the wire NSGAFOU 1x2.5 3.6/6kV has a conductor cross-section of 2.5mm2 and a nominal voltage between conductor and earth of 3.6kV and a nominal voltage between conductor and conductor of 3.6kV.
Characteristics of the rubber single-core cable NSGAFOU: Current carrying capacity and short-circuit resistance
The type code already contains a lot of relevant information about the NSGAFOU structure. The conductor temperature of 90°C ensures a high level of current carrying capacity and even guarantees short-circuit resistance for theNSGAFOU line because of its insulation thickness. When used in switchgear and distributors up to 1kV, it is considered short-circuit resistant and earth-leakage proof.

NSGAFOU’s strengths become apparent not only in public transport. The rubber single-core cable is also used inswitchgear and control cabinets. Here, it is applied as a connecting cable and classified as short circuit-resistant at a nominal voltage of up to 1kV. This short-circuit resistance is what makes the line a suitable solution for switchgears and internal device wiring.
