Things to know about overhead lines

Overhead lines meeting any requirement

Faber is your point of contact for different types of overhead power lines and overhead line equipment. Our powerful overhead lines are tested for quality. You can choose from single-, double- and quad-core overhead lines with a wire cross-section between 16mm² and 95mm². Our overhead line insulators are black, and their outer diameter varies from approx. 8mm to 40.1mm. Faber cables for overhead line construction are of conductor category 2, so they are multi-wire.
Overhead transmission lines cannot be used underground; they have been exclusively designed for fixed installation on transmission masts. Low-voltage lines can be fitted to masts made from wood, concrete or steel tube; high-voltage lines require steel-lattice poles.

Low voltage overhead power lines on roof-mounted transmission masts

In particular outside of conurbations, you will find overhead transmission lines in rural residential areas. Electricity is supplied via short transmission masts made from wood, concrete or steel tube, so called overhead line towers, fitted to the roof. Current is transported along cables on crossbars, spanning the spaces between houses.
Low-voltage connections have cables tapping the line primarily to supply the relevant house with electricity. If several lines are laid, it is also possible to supply electricity for street lighting.
Tap into Faber’s extensive portfolio of quality-tested cables to install overhead transmission lines for your home. We have the right overhead cable with insulation as well as any other wires or cables required for overhead electric lines. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your personal contact for any questions you may have about overhead electrification.

High voltage overhead power lines—overhead lines on transmission masts

If an overhead line has a voltage of more than 1.2kV, it is called a high-voltage overhead line. High voltage overhead transmission lines cannot be fitted to roof-mounted transmission masts but require high steel lattice poles outside the reach of people.
High-voltage overhead cables and overhead line towers are virtually a given in the German landscape. Nevertheless, the aim is to keep the impact on protective goods as small as possible when erecting overhead power lines. Protective goods are, for instance, people, animals, landscapes and soil. The protection of birds is an issue that is always in the foreground when designing and erecting overhead electricity cables. Another aspect is to keep overhead lines as far away from residential areas as possible to provide protection from electric shock.
The poles connecting the cables are spaced at an average distance of 300 to 450m. Overhead power lines safety is provided through a ground wire, installed on the pole’s highest point, for lightning protection. In addition, the entire section where cables are laid, is equipped with overhead line insulators, mostly pendant insulators.
Overhead lines connected by transmission poles provide a stable grid and secure cross-country energy distribution, which is also cheaper than distributing electricity through underground cables.
